Artscape: America's Largest Free Arts Festival
There's no better way to immerse yourself in the artistic spirit of Baltimore than by attending Artscape, the largest free outdoor arts festival in the United States. Hosted by the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, Artscape returns in 2023 for its 38th year after a three-year hiatus. Spanning three days from September 22-24, this immersive festival showcases more than 200 performing artists and over 100 visual artists and artisans. Make plans to be among the hundreds of thousands who will attend Artscape when you stay with us at Rachael’s Dowry Bed and Breakfast this fall.
Artscape first started in 1982 as an arts fair that marketed Baltimore as a cultural hub. Today, more than 40 years later, it continues that tradition by highlighting the city as a world-class center for artistic excellence. The festival, held in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon and Bolton Hill neighborhoods near midtown, brings the talents of visual, performing, literary and culinary artists together for one fantastic weekend.
From the moment you step foot into Artscape, you'll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds and creative energy. Explore the exhibitions of imaginative and inspiring work by local and international artists across various disciplines, including painting, sculpture, photography and more. One of the highlights of Artscape is the Artisan Marketplace, a bustling outdoor bazaar where you can browse and purchase unique artwork and crafts directly from the creators. Whether you're looking for a stunning painting to hang in your living room or a one-of-a-kind handmade accessory, you're sure to find something that catches your eye. The Artisan Marketplace is a fantastic opportunity to support artists’ livelihoods and take home a piece of Baltimore's vibrant art scene.
In addition to the visual arts, Artscape offers a diverse lineup of live music and dance performances on four stages throughout the festival grounds. From soulful jazz bands to energetic hip-hop dancers, the entertainment at Artscape is as diverse as the city itself. There will be several top-tier entertainers who will headline the festival's musical lineup. Previous headliners include Ray Charles, Patti LaBelle, The Temptations, Roberta Flack, Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, to name a few.
Artscape isn't just about showcasing the finished artworks; it's also about celebrating the creative process and fostering a sense of community. The festival provides a platform for emerging artists to gain exposure and connect with established professionals in the industry. It's a melting pot of artistic expression and a place where new collaborations and ideas are born. The festival also features interactive exhibits and workshops where attendees can try their hand at various art forms and unleash their own creativity.
Artscape is also a culinary showcase for top food vendors from Baltimore and beyond who will be serving up their own masterpieces. From Maryland favorites like crab cakes and pit beef to cuisine from around the world like Venezuelan arepas, you’ll have endless choices to indulge your taste buds while enjoying the festivities. Plus, be sure to check out Artscape’s Music and Beer Garden for a refreshing selection of craft beverages to complement your culinary experience.
Artscape is a true testament to the thriving arts and cultural scene in Baltimore — a decades-long tradition that we’re glad to welcome back in 2023. Book your stay at our historic bed-and-breakfast during Artscape weekend and get ready to immerse yourself in the vibrant tapestry of art, music and culture at this incredible festival in the heart of Baltimore.
