Baltimore Symphony Orchestra: A Crescendo in Charm City
Here in Baltimore we have a world-class cultural gem that surprises many people. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is one of the country’s best, with maestros and musicians that are recognized on the global stage. Originally established in 1916, the BSO stays very relevant today with varied performance types and styles throughout the year. Whether it’s a commanding performance of opera or small ensembles focused on children’s entertainment, everyone can find musical performances that they’ll love.
The gorgeous home of the BSO, the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, is a landmark located on Cathedral Street in Baltimore's historic Mount Vernon neighborhood. It’s less than 2 miles from Rachael's Dowry Bed and Breakfast and has ample free parking. As Maryland’s orchestra, the BSO also performs weekly for the DC area at The Music Center at Strathmore in Montgomery County, and they can be streamed online as well on BSO Offstage.
Under the direction of our exciting new music director Jonathon Heyward, the BSO presents 52 weeks of awe-inspiring concerts. Jonathon took over from the legendary Marin Alsop and is continuing her efforts to inspire young people with classical music. The 2024-25 season, themed "Music that Resonates," promises to be particularly enchanting, filled with all-star talent, never-before-heard world premieres, and exciting community partnerships.
The season opens with Gala Celebrations, showcasing acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma in back-to-back performances at both the Meyerhoff and Strathmore in September. This kickoff sets the stage for a season rich with extraordinary guest talent, including pianist Alice Sara Ott, pianist Yefim Bronfman, violinist Augustin Hadelich, cellist Joshua Roman, and soprano Julia Bullock. These artists highlight the BSO’s robust schedule, which includes Pops, Classical, Films, Holiday, and Family Series performances.
One of the season’s most anticipated events is the conclusion in mid-June, with an opera masterpiece "Aida" by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. This opera, a powerful tale of romance, tragedy, loyalty, and family, will feature Angel Blue, one of the finest sopranos of her generation, in the title role of Aida. Her performance is sure to be a fitting finale to a season that will have both seasoned concert goers and new listeners spellbound.
As a key cultural institution for the city and the state, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is not just an orchestra; it is a beacon of artistic excellence and community engagement. With its storied history and ambitious future, the BSO continues to be a source of pride and inspiration for everyone who experiences its magic.
