Celebrating Baltimore's Rich African American History at AFRAM
As a majority Black city for the last several decades, Baltimore's African American community has had, and continues to have, an enormous impact on the city's historical, political and cultural landscape. Each year, the talents, accomplishments and contributions of the Black community are celebrated at the AFRAM festival, a Baltimore tradition for 46 years. Stay with us at Rachael's Dowry Bed & Breakfast during Juneteenth weekend and be one of the 200,000 attendees who join in the annual celebration of African American life, music and culture.
AFRAM traces its roots back to the mid-1970s when it emerged as a community-led event aimed at highlighting African American heritage and promoting unity. Over the years, the festival has grown in scale and popularity. In fact, it's one of the largest African American festivals on the East Coast. Held in Baltimore's Druid Hill Park, this family-oriented event is filled with entertainers, children's activities, arts, history, education, health and wellness, and more. In 2023, this two-day event is set for June 17-18.
One of the biggest highlights of AFRAM is the music. The event attracts major national performing artists year after year. Among the headliners for the 2023 AFRAM festival are the Isley Brothers, recipients of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This pop group had big success in the 1960s and 1970s with hits including "Shout," "Twist and Shout," and "It's Your Thing." Singer, songwriter, rapper and music producer Ty Dolla $ign will also take the stage with his hits "Paranoid," Or Nah," and "Work From Home." Baltimore's own Tamar Braxton will perform, as will Spinderella as part of a salute to 50 years of hip hop music.
In addition to the headlining artists, AFRAM attendees can experience a wide range of activities, including live performances by up-and-coming regional musicians, dance troupes and spoken-word artists. Local vendors offer delicious soul food, traditional African American dishes and regional Baltimore favorites, while artisans showcase their crafts and artwork. AFRAM also hosts educational exhibits that highlight the city's Black history, providing a deeper understanding of the struggles and triumphs of this vibrant community.
Baltimore's African American history is a testament to the resilience and contributions of its community. Through music, food and community, AFRAM serves as a reminder of this rich heritage, bringing people together to celebrate the achievements and cultural legacy of African Americans in Baltimore.
