Discover Baltimore's Eccentric Hampton Neighborhood
Baltimore is a city of neighborhoods. There are roughly 200 tight-knit communities that, together, have shaped the city's rich history and vibrant culture. But each neighborhood on its own has a unique story to tell. Nowhere is that more evident than Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood, located about 4 miles north of Rachael's Dowry Bed & Breakfast.
Hampden was originally built in the 1880s around the Jones Falls mills to provide homes for the millworkers. Today, it's known for its artistic flair and kitschy charm. The main drag through the neighborhood is The Avenue, a stretch of 36th Street lined with independent boutiques and vintage stores, trendy restaurants, and lively bars. Notable shops include Atomic Books, an independent bookstore that specializes in comics and graphic novels; Doubledutch Boutique, a place for modern clothing and accessories and quality vintage; and Balto, a vintage shop with an impressive collection of retro graphic tees and baseball hats.
Hampden has a thriving food and drink scene, with options ranging from casual cafes to upscale restaurants. Check out The Food Market and its industrial-modern vibe. This American bistro serves creative, approachable dishes like bacon birria quesadillas and pickle-brined fried chicken. Other favorite eats include The Arthouse, Blue Pit BBQ and Rocket to Venus. For drinks, stop in the Bluebird Cocktail Room, a speakeasy-style bar, or one of several breweries, including Nepenthe Brewing Co. and Union Craft Brewing. Need something sweet? Grab some insanely delicious ice cream at The Charmery.
A few times each year, Hampton celebrates its distinctive spirit with neighborhood-wide festivities. In June, enjoy live music, food vendors, arts and crafts, and a parade at HonFest. The festival takes its name from "Hon," short for "Honey," a longtime Baltimore term of endearment and is associated with the city's working-class roots. There's even a "Best Hon" contest, in which participants dress up in colorful vintage clothing, beehive hairdos and cat-eye glasses.
In September, Hampdenfest draws big crowds for a day of eclectic fun. This street festival features three outdoor stages with performances by indie rock, folk, punk, hip hop and experimental acts. Sign up for the pie-eating contest or the atomic wings challenge — or simply feast on the abundance of Chesapeake Bay regional cuisine including pit beef, crab cakes and locally brewed beer.
During the holidays, come to Hampden's 34th Street where homeowners adorn their houses with thousands upon thousands of lights and Christmas decorations. Dubbed "Miracle on 34th Street" after the classic holiday movie, this awe-inspiring display attracts visitors from all over the world to witness the spectacle. It's been a neighborhood tradition for more than seven decades!
Overall, Hampden is a neighborhood that's full of surprises and delights. Whether you are visiting for one its quirky festivals or just looking to explore a new corner of Baltimore, there's plenty to see and do in this unique community with a personality and style all its own.
