Entrepreneur Magazine Recognizes Rachael's Dowry Bed and Breakfast
Hello, everyone! I'm excited to share some wonderful news about Rachael's Dowry Bed and Breakfast right here in Baltimore. As the owner and innkeeper of this charming B&B, I'm thrilled to announce that our little slice of history has recently been recognized in Entrepreneur Magazine. In a July 2023 feature story about America's 150 favorite mom-and-pop shops, Rachael's Dowry was highlighted as a top vacation experience — and I am truly humbled. It's been quite a journey, and I'd like to take you through the story of why I decided to run a B&B, my favorite parts of this endeavor, and what makes Rachael's Dowry so special.
Why a Bed-and-Breakfast?
Running a bed-and-breakfast wasn't always on my radar. My sister and I often dreamed about it, seeking an escape from our high-stress jobs. But life has a funny way of guiding us down unexpected paths. After 13 years in New Zealand, I returned to the States, yearning for a change. I wanted to escape the corporate world and bridge the cash flow gap until retirement. Serendipitously, during my search, I stumbled upon Rachael's Dowry, and it felt like destiny knocking at the door.
The Joy of Hosting Guests
The best part of running a B&B? That's an easy one — it's the people. I've always been a social person, and my guests are the heart and soul of this venture. Meeting incredible individuals from diverse backgrounds, each contributing something significant to society, has been an absolute privilege. Staying at a B&B fosters a unique sense of community, where everyone interacts and shares experiences despite their differences. Every day brings new faces, new stories and new perspectives, enriching my life in ways I never could have imagined.
One of the things I love most is sharing the deep history of Rachael's Dowry with our guests. It's not just a place to stay; it's a place with a remarkable story. This historic home served as a safe house on the Underground Railroad and even hosted the likes of George and Martha Washington. When guests check in, they become a part of this storied history, and it's a privilege to make them feel as special as those who visited over 200 years ago.
A Home Away from Home
Rachael's Dowry is an oasis of tranquility nestled right in the heart of Baltimore. There's a magical charm to this house that guests often describe as feeling like home. Many guests report sleeping better here, awakening to the enticing aroma of breakfast wafting through the air. When you walk through our doors, you'll instantly feel at ease, and with our central location, you can explore all that Baltimore has to offer. This home has witnessed most of America's history, and it continues to play a vital role in our guests' experiences.
Unique Stories that Confirm I Made the Right Choice
Every day I wake up with guests in the house, I'm reassured that I made the right choice in becoming an innkeeper. I've transitioned from corporate stress and politics to a world where my main concerns are how to brighten people's days and avoid overcooking breakfast. It's a welcome change, to say the least!
While I've had the privilege of hosting a few celebrities over the past seven years, it's often the quieter, less famous guests who surprise me the most with their contributions to humanity. Meeting individuals who have made breakthroughs in various fields, led charities and NGOs, or dedicated their careers to teaching and mentoring others is a constant source of inspiration. Their energy fuels me daily, reaffirming that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. It's the return guests, who keep coming back year after year, that truly warm my heart. Their loyalty tells me that I've found my calling, one that's far more fulfilling than my previous corporate career.
Moreover, I relish the opportunity to introduce guests to Baltimore, one of the most underrated cities on the East Coast. Despite the negative portrayals in the media and Hollywood, Baltimore is a safe and friendly city with a rich history and stunning waterfront. It's always a joy to witness visitors falling in love with this city and hearing them express their desire to return for more.
The journey of owning and operating Rachael's Dowry Bed and Breakfast has been a remarkable one. It's a labor of love that has allowed me to connect with incredible people, share the rich history of this place, and showcase the beauty of Baltimore. And now, being recognized in Entrepreneur Magazine is a testament to the unique experience we offer to our guests. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Rachael's Dowry and look forward to hosting even more wonderful guests as we continue our journey. Thank you for being a part of our story!
