Exploring Baltimore on the Maryland Crab and Oyster Trail
Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay are synonymous with fresh seafood, and there's no better way to experience this culinary delight than by embarking on the Maryland Crab and Oyster Trail. This trail is a curated journey highlighting the best crab houses and oyster bars across the state, with at least a dozen stops here in Baltimore. We're happy to point our guests at Rachael's Dowry Bed and Breakfast to some of our favorite stops on the trail. From steamed blue crabs covered in Old Bay to briny oysters on the half shell, you'll have fun indulging in some of the region's finest seafood along the Maryland Crab and Oyster Trail.
Located in the heart of Fells Point, with its cobblestone streets and waterfront views, is Thames Street Oyster House. This beloved establishment is famed for its impressive à la cart raw bar and delicious lobster rolls. Seating is limited in this small restaurant set in a historic row home, so reservations are highly recommended. Just a short walk away, you'll find The Choptank in the newly renovated 200-year-old Broad Street Market. This authentic Maryland crab house experience features Maryland’s famous cuisine, highlighted by steamed hard-shell blue crabs. With live music on the indoor stage and a spacious patio for outdoor dining, The Choptank keeps things both entertaining and delicious.
Another great choice in Fells Point is Captain James Landing. Opened in 1979, this iconic restaurant is shaped like a merchant vessel — you can't miss it! You can dine on steak and seafood entrees in the restaurant or opt for the crab house with casual waterfront seating.
On the southern side of Baltimore, Locust Point Steamers stands out with its friendly atmosphere and perfectly steamed crabs alongside a top-notch oyster selection. It's a family-owned crab shack that's consistently ranked among the best in Baltimore. Be sure to check out the third story rooftop deck that overlooks the harbor. On the Baltimore Peninsula, Nick’s Fish House chefs up an extensive seafood menu of regional specialties and what they say are the best steamed crabs in town. Try it for yourself! With beautiful Patapsco River views from the waterfront deck, Nick's is a perfect spot for a summer evening.
Need another way to explore Baltimore's famed seafood? Then be sure to attend Baltimore Magazine’s Crab Fest on July 20. This event is a highlight of the summer, and your ticket includes access to eats, beer, live music, and retail vendors. The venue, the historic B&O Railroad Museum, adds a unique backdrop to blend Baltimore’s rich history with its vibrant culinary scene.
