Trailblazing in Baltimore: The City's Best Hike & Bike Paths
If there's one thing we Baltimoreans love, it's exploring our city. Whether it's a peaceful Sunday afternoon or a crisp autumn morning, there's nothing quite like hitting the trails and soaking in the sights that make Charm City, well, charming. From the captivating Inner Harbor to hidden gems in our city parks, Baltimore’s hike and bike trails are a great way to see a different side of the city. When you're packing for your getaway stay at Rachael's Dowry Bed and Breakfast, be sure to pack your hiking shoes or load up your bike. You'll want to put them to good use on some of our best trails.
One of our personal favorites has to be the Gwynns Falls Trail. Stretching over 15 miles, this urban greenway is a bit of an adventure through both time and terrain. It winds through neighborhoods, parks, cultural resources, and industrial areas, giving you a real sense of Baltimore's rich history. For the nature lovers among us, Gwynns Falls offers lush woodlands and streams, with plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the scenery of this surprising urban oasis. Easily accessed by nine different trailheads, the trail’s diverse landscape means you can choose your own adventure—whether it’s a quick run through a park or a longer, more leisurely ride connecting several neighborhoods.
Another gem is the Jones Falls Trail. This 10-mile stretch is perfect for those who want a mix of urban and natural environments. Starting near the Inner Harbor, this trail takes you along the Jones Falls River, through Druid Hill Park, and up to Cylburn Arboretum at the trail's northern end, which is a great place for birdwatching. One of the coolest parts about this trail is that it gives you a little bit of everything. You’ll start in the hustle and bustle of the city, but before you know it, you’re surrounded by trees and the sounds of nature. It’s like a mini escape right within the city limits.
You also can't go wrong with a trek on the Waterfront Promenade. This one is more of a leisurely walk or bike ride, but it’s a classic for a reason. This 4.7 mile out-and-back trail stretches from Fells Point to Canton Waterfront Park, taking you along the scenic Inner Harbor and offering some of the most iconic views of Baltimore’s skyline. You'll pass by some of the city’s top attractions, like the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center. Plus, with all the waterfront restaurants and cafes along the way, it’s easy to take a break and grab a bite with a view. It’s a great trail for showing off our city to out-of-towners.
Next up is the Herring Run Trail, nestled in a stream valley in northeast Baltimore. Running through the 375-acre Herring Run Park, it offers a 2.5 mile loop of greenery and peaceful surroundings — ideal for a walk, jog, or bike ride, with the sound of the stream following you along the way. And if you’re into history, you'll love checking out the old stone bridges and the historic sites sprinkled around the park. It's got that laid-back, neighborhood vibe that makes it feel like home, no matter where you're from.
