A Window into Maryland’s Past at the Maryland Center for History and Culture
Step into the heart of Maryland’s history at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC), a vibrant space where stories come alive, perspectives are challenged, and connections to our past take on new meaning. Located in Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, this museum and library offer an inspiring journey through the events, people, and cultures that have shaped Maryland—and influenced the nation.
You might’ve known this place by its old name—the Maryland Historical Society. It got a fresh name and a new vibe back in 2020, but the mission remains the same: preserving and sharing the rich, complex history of Maryland. It does this through a collection spanning 7 million books, documents, and photographs, as well as 350,000 objects.
Iconic Pieces and Local Legends
The galleries are packed with fascinating finds. The museum showcases everything from Native American artifacts dating back to 5,000 B.C. to iconic treasures like the original manuscript of Francis Scott Key’s “The Star-Spangled Banner,” our national anthem. There are nine portraits by Joshua Johnson, the first Black professional artist in America, alongside Maryland landscapes by Francis Guy. Don’t miss the silver pieces crafted by Samuel Kirk, a Baltimore silversmith who left a sparkling legacy.
Immersive Exhibits That Tell Maryland’s Story
One of the things we love about the MCHC is how it connects Maryland’s past with today’s world. Its current exhibits are a perfect example.
- Passion and Purpose: Voices of Maryland's Civil Rights Activists captures the fight for Black freedom through oral histories and photography, shining a light on the individuals driving the ongoing struggle for equality.
- Material & Memories celebrates the artistry of Elizabeth Talford Scott, whose quilts, crafted from family clothing and household fabrics, are paired with works by the African American Quilters of Baltimore. These pieces weave together themes of memory, resilience, and identity.
- Claire McCardell explores the life and legacy of this Maryland native, whose innovative designs revolutionized women’s fashion in America during the 20th century. Her impact on modern sportswear continues to resonate today.
- Collecting Maryland: Art|Artifacts|Community offers a stunning display of fine and decorative arts, showcasing treasures from the museum’s 180-year history.
